Services
Management of Menstrual Disorders
The average menstrual blood loss is 30 to 50 ml a day (1 to 2 ounces). Over a period, which typically lasts seven days or fewer, a woman loses an average of 80 ml of blood. Women with medically heavy periods lose more blood, which leads to anaemia and poor quality of life overall.
Other menstrual problems include bleeding or spotting that happens between your periods, prolonged bleeding, irregular bleeding and periods that are accompanied by severe cramping.
Up to 50 - 60 % of women who suffer from heavy periods have no obvous underlying cause. Whether a cause is identified or not, there are a range of treatment options that can help you to manage your symptoms and improve your quality of life.
I provide comprehensive investigations and management options for menstrual disorders, including medical therapy, endometrial ablation, and hysterectomy when necessary.
Treatment of Uterine Fibroids
Fibroids are benign lumps of the muscle wall of the uterus (womb). They are the most common growths of the female reproductive tract, affecting up to 50% of women in their lifetime.
Fibroids can cause heavy and prolonged periods, bleeding between periods and pelvic pain and pressure. However, not everyone will develop symptoms or require treatment.
There are a variety of treatment options available.
My approach to uterine fibroids includes medical treatment, fibroid removal, and hysterectomy as appropriate.
Management of Benign Ovarian Cysts
Ovarian cysts are very common and do not usually cause any symptoms.
If there are symptoms, these are generally non-specific. These include:
Pelvic pain - can be dull, heavy sensation or sudden, severe and sharp pain
Pain during sex
Difficulty emptying your bowel
A frequent need to urinate
Bloating and a swollen tummy
Feeling very full after only eating a little
Most ovarian cysts are benign (non-cancerous) and some go away in a few months without needing any treatment.
I offer management for benign ovarian cysts including surgical treatment when indicated.
Investigation of Post-menopausal Bleeding
Postmenopausal bleeding is not usually serious, but in a minority of cases, it can be a symptom of pre-cancer or cancer. Therefore, it is essential to report any postmenopausal bleeding even if it has only happened once, there is only a small amount of blood, spotting, or pink or brown discharge, or you do not have any other associated symptoms.
I provide appropriate investigations into the cause(s) of postmenopausal bleeding and offer treatment accordingly.
Removal of Uterine Polyps
Uterine polyps are localised growths of the inner wall of the uterus (lining of the womb). A majority of these polyps are benign (non-cancerous). However, they can cause many symptoms, such as irregular periods, bleeding (spotting) between periods, heavy periods, postmenopausal bleeding and infertility.
I offer investigation and hysteroscopy guided removal of uterine polyps.
Treatment of Adenomyosis
Adenomyosis occurs when the tissue that normally lines the inside of the womb (endometrial tissue) grows into the muscular wall of the uterus. The cause of adenomyosis is not fully known yet.
Adenomyosis can cause enlargement of the womb and lead to heavy, prolonged and painful periods, longstanding pelvic pain and painful intercourse.
There are hormonal and non-hormonal treatment options that can help with severe symptoms associated with adenomyosis. Although not always necessary, removal of the uterus (hysterectomy) cures it.
Investigation of Pelvic Pain
With expertise in both laparoscopic (keyhole) and open surgical options, I provide thorough investigation and treatment for pelvic pain.
